Horizons Restaurant, Sausalito

Horizons' decor is attractive, making the most of its waterside location in the style of an old, wood-pannelled yacht with huge, glass windows. Not surprising though, as it was built in 1898 by the San Francisco Yacht Club. The front leads out onto wooden decking with beautiful views over the Bay and San Francisco.

Our little table on the decking was in a prime spot on the far right sheltered by a glass screen and just behind the 'bar counter' where you can sit on stools and gaze directly over the water.

As we sat down we were served fresh bread and drinks, and we ordered a crab and melted cheese brioche with mixed greens, and a chicken and melted cheddar sandwich with spicy coleslaw.

Suddenly, a seagull perched on a wooden pole in the water. 'Pepe!' pronounced our waiter. 'He's a pet!' and proceeded to toss titbits. Pepe's eye-beak coordination was perfect. Once satiated and with a bulging neck, he flew down to the waves to digest.

Food and service were very good, ambience wonderful and entertainment free. I think Horizons would make a great evening dinner venue, offering for larger parties rounded bay-style seating and specialising in sea food.

Tip One: the sun is on the decking in the morning and almost gone by 2 pm.

Tip Two: check ferry times for last sailings!
